What ever happened in France is despicable and heineous and cannot be condoned under any pretext. But it's not the clash of civilizations but conflict of religious fundamentalism and critical rationality. Clash of civilization is imperialist bogy as was the burden of civilization in colonial era. This fundamentalist reaction is qualitatively no different than communal intolerance by Hindutva zealots of rational critique of religious orthodoxy and superstition that culminated into killings of kalburgi, Dabholkar, Gauri Lankesh and Pansare or even the mob lynching's by so-called cow vigilante. These murders have been justified on fb groups of even universities. Europe. particularly France has travelled long way towards religious tolerance owing to the movements like Renaissance and Enlightenment, which were basically intellectual revolutions. 4 centuries ago even in Europe critical rationality was not tolerated. Scientist-philosopher Bruno was burnt alive on the cross roads of Rome under the church judgement. Galileo spent major part of life under house arrest for his scientific inventions. Many Enlightenment philosophers including Voltaire, Rousseau and Thomas Pain were persecuted. The house of Thomas Pain in US was put ablaze the publisher of his book in London was arrested. The rulers of Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arab are critical of French President's assertion of defending peoples' right to freedom of expression is not due to civilizational but political reasons.
