In 1992, I wrote an article in Hindi on the occasion of Columbus's quint centenary, on Slavery, Race and Ideology in the US as Columbus's legacy. Have been thinking of translating it in English since then, ha ha. Till around 1740 Africans had not yet acclimatized with the new environs and did not live longer and hence the slave labor was not economically gainful. The Virginia boom was result of not slave labor but the indentured labor of the same skin and nationality. It is only since around the middle of the 18th century the slave labour became the primary basis of the economic development and for its justification, the ideology of the Race was constructed. US culture has been historically inhuman and barbaric.
