Press Release

Protest against the Fascist Onslaught at JNU
                                                                                                                                      New Delhi
September 18, 2018

Janhastakshep takes a serious note of the violent hooliganism by ABVP goons, the affiliate student wing of the RSS in JNU, after being whitewashed in the JNUSU elections, a fascist attack on its democratic academic culture of discussion and debate. It is not only an attack on JNU’s democratic ethos but sounds the danger- bell for the democratic ethos of the country.  Ever since the present government took over power, ABVPhas been acting as Nazi storm troopers (SA), the latest act of their criminal hooliganism is violence in JNU  campus. JNU has been an eyesore for RSS right from its inception, as its culture of intellectual freedom and free debate discussion, is not conducive for the growth of obscurantist, rightwing ideologies. As is well-known by now that the goons, armed with rods and sticks, led by ABVP leaders, gate-crashed into the counting room in the night of 14th-15th September 2018; tried to snatch the ballot-boxes and physically assaulted some election commissioners. It is to be noted that JNUSU’s election commission is unique students’ body in the world. Each school consensually elects an election commissioner, who is considered to be non-partitioned and is not member of any organization. The commissioners elect from among themselves a chief election commissioner. There is no role of authorities or state in the election process. The attack did not stop at disturbing and installing the counting of votes but the hooliganism continued till morning. The newly elected President Balaji was beaten up, when he tried to protect a student and was threatened to mob-lynching, by ABVP leaders.

Janhastakshep condemns this state-sponsored hooliganism and demands action against the miscreants. It salutes to, and express solidarity with, the JNU community for maintaining their calm, who and peacefully lodged their protest by marching in large umber in the peace march, with arguments; songs and slogans. To any attack, JNU’s response is argument.
